Image below: Bat path freeze frames - pushed out towards gully line, then encourages dragging sharply through wide mid-on angle
Playing v Spin - Be positive, don't be afraid to use your feet, but weigh up the game situation and if possible become familiar with what the ball is doing off the pitch and the pace of the bowler (trying to pickup on whether the bowler has any variations) and then look to be assertive/positive. When using your feet, remember that you can still be positive looking to hit the ball powerfully on the floor, don't have to look to go aerial. If trying to keep it on the floor ensure head is right over the ball and weight through it in order to hit well (see on a few occasions leaning back on the above). Be Decisive and Commit.
- Manage back swing to ensure bat is remaining fairly straight (straight back, or off stump at it's absolute widest) to offer the best chance of managing the full face on the down swing and bringing through the ball on contact. See video below where the bat does get quite wide out towards gully angle, which increases the likelihood of it then dragging down on a path towards mid-on, or even more sharply towards mid-wicket (encouraged with a strong bottom hand).

Understanding the benefits of establishing a powerful base position (fielding and bowling) to generate good power/torque.
Image on the left was before you were challenged to stride out purposefully - image on the right is a more powerful base load position which lends itself to throwing & bowling with a lot more purpose and creating power all the way up your body. |
Bowling
Tactical Approach: Attacking the stumps = Split field with protection both sides Bowling to an off-side based field = Looking to hit 4th/5th stump channel by the time it reaches the batsman Left Hand Batsman - Slightly straighter in run up and delivery to aim to work in a straighter line, rather than to a RHB using the angle to your advantage. Understanding your own bowling - Where do you need to look to be most successful in hitting the area you're trying to. What works for you? (Trial & Error) |

Feedback:
Well balanced in stance and sets up in a comfortable, stable position with head remaining upright and eyes level. Good hand eye coordination and can often make good contact with the ball away from his body, despite his footwork not necessarily benefiting him (being closer to the ball would a better opportunity to hit the ball well, more consistently and with less risk). By being tentative to get out at the ball on the front foot, Joe can be quite dependent on the ball being very full to in order to play positively. Working with a more confident, purposeful stride would offer the opportunity to get closer to good length balls and could enable him to put his hands positively through when striking, more often. Showed a good ability to work off his legs, remaining upright in his stance long enough and leaning over the ball to time effectively. Most importantly....enjoy the challenge of batting and work hard for the satisfaction it can offer when you succeed and make a score/s. Body language suggests at times that batting looks like a chore, rather than a fun, enjoyable way of expressing yourself and scoring runs. If you don't execute a shot as well as you might have wanted to, then look at the positives, and learn from what didn't work quite so well to try to put into practice next time. |
Areas to work on:
- Try to work with a more purposeful, yet comfortable stride when playing front foot. Try to allow back foot to remain as still as possible to offer more opportunity to set up a strong, well balanced position at contact. - Perhaps look to be a bit more positive to coincide with the above, aiming to get closer to good length and balls of a full'ish length can create more half volley's to hit through and try to cash in on. - Create more bat speed, ensure hands are working together without getting reckless and losing the shape of the bat, but Joe looks to be holding back when the ball is full enough to hit through. |

Joe can be quite dependent on the pace he can generate from his arm and body rotation, as opposed to the momentum he could generate in his run up to assist and carry that momentum into delivery, and through release.
Run up/approach is quite stuttery and therefore lacks as much momentum and energy as it could have through his delivery. He could try to work at opening his strides up into his delivery to ensure he is bowling purposefully and carrying a good amount of momentum through and gaining plenty from his left hip driving him forwards pver his front leg. Due to relying on his arm speed for his pace, this encourages Joe to fall away slightly and is at risk of losing his control and may find it harder to shape the ball also. |
Areas to work on:
- Staying more upright in delivery. Upper body being stronger and not falling away, alignment work to focus on keeping Joe more upright and working in more of a straight line towards the stumps, gaining plenty from his front arm pulling vertically donwards and through.
- Run up, focusing on opening his strides up as he approaches the crease to build up a good amount of momentum and carry this through his action (being better aligned having worked on the above) and creating more energy in general.
